Chapter 1

Define each of the following words using both textual clues and a dictionary.  As always, the purpose of vocabulary work is to develop an understanding of what the word means.  Many times you will come across a definition in a dictionary that doesn’t exactly make sense to you.  In this case, you should do a couple of things:
  1. Use the dictionary to help you understand unfamiliar words in the definition?
  2. Look up the vocabulary word using a different dictionary.
  3. Consider each definition listed because some words have multiple meanings.  So, identifying the one that matches the context can make all the difference in your understanding.

“Tell the truth,” Dad coaxed.  “Aren’t you really looking forward to meeting her?  You must at least be curious.”

o       Based on the context, what do you think “coaxed” means?

o       Using a dictionary, define “coaxed” in a way that MAKES SENSE to YOU.

o       Now that you understand what “coaxed” means, create your own sentence that incorporates (uses) the word correctly.

Authors sometimes use symbolism to communicate a particular idea in a slightly different way.  In chapter one, Ben’s dad is trying to convince Ben that sometimes in life it doesn’t matter what you think because you need to do it anyway.

“Everybody has to fight a dragon sometime,” he said slowly.  “You have different dragons to fight, that’s all.  I think you might even slay one or two this weekend.”

What is Ben’s dad trying to explain here?  Think about our discussion in group before writing your answer.
