As we’ve learned in the first three chapters, Ben can be stubborn in his beliefs yet accepting and agreeable other times.  During chapter three Ben’s stubborn side returns when the surprise turns out to be a neighbor’s Labrador Retriever.  It’s clear Ben doesn’t like dogs.  In fact, he is rather fearful of them.

Make friends with a dog?  Never!

Maybe he was the dragon that Dad had talked about.

Consider how the above examples compare to times in the story when Ben was reluctant to like anything having to do with his visit with Aunt Rose.  Do you think Ben will begin to accept and actually like the dog if he’s given enough time?  Explain why or why not.

The last line of the third chapter states, “Sunday afternoon seemed like a hundred years away.”  Describe what Ben means by this and explain why he’s feeling this way.
